    Mail Merge does work.
So like every good brainwashed law student, I sent out resumes and cover letters like whoa to most corners of the globe starting Friday, a process that has not yet ended. Seriously, like every firm on NALP that hires 1Ls in SF, LA, Phoenix, Tucson, Chicago, DC, Boston, Atlanta, and some of NY.
And yesterday, a boutiquey litigation firm (but still paying crazy cash) called me bc they wanted to know if I'd be in Chicago over winter break, since they want to interview me!
So I switched my flights, and will now be in Chicago from January 17th-21st, so all you Chicago people, you have your warning now (though there will be reminders)

So yay! Principles be damned! 2600/week can pay off any morals I have... at least for the moment. And yes yes, I shouldn't put the cart before the horse, but I still find it super promising since all the older people were like blah blah mail merge doesn't work no one ever gets contacted from it... so hooray! Though I already did start fantasizing about my cute brown line sublet...

And yay for Chicago, even though January would not be my ideal time to visit. But I can totally get samosas and plaintain nachos and Giordanos, so it's all worth it.

It makes contracts outlining slightly less painful than it would otherwise be.

I'm listening to Judy Garland's Christmas album and sitting alone in my house.

It's almost like I'm a repressed gay man in the pre-Stonewall era, if only I were drinking vodka instead of water...

    Oh Chauncey's class...

I think maybe I am incapable of outlining.

Also, I just stabbed myself in the eye with my own thumb trying to brush back my hair.

    Wow, I'm special.

Dick Vitale makes me want to kick things.

Hmm, funny how Lute Olson has more wins than anyone on the list other than Bob Knight (and Eddie Sutton, also forgotten)...

In lieu of this oversight, some facts about Mr. Olson from Wikipedia:

Basically Jim Caple stole my thoughts. But it's coo.
    Midwest is Best
    By Jim Caple
    Page 2

To paraphrase Fred Willard in "Waiting for Guffman," the Midwest is the best coast in baseball … if you consider the Mississippi River one of the coasts. And you would already know the Midwest is home to all that is good and wholesome and admirable in baseball, except Midwesterners are too grounded and humble and decent to brag about it.

The East Coast? Forget it. The East Coast is in decline and in denial. Those overpriced, overrated and over-hyped AL East and NL East teams have produced just two world championships in the past six seasons. The Atlanta Braves had a losing record this year. The Yankees get knocked out of the postseason earlier and earlier. The Red Sox are so desperate they recently agreed to pay $51.1 million just for the right to negotiate with Scott Boras.

Meanwhile, the West Coast is too busy producing bad movies, expensive coffee and software security updates to field championship teams. Money Ball has yet to produce an American League pennant in Oakland, let alone a World Series win. The Dodgers haven't won a World Series since Patrick Swayze had a career. The Giants haven't won a World Series since moving to San Francisco. The Mariners and Padres have never won a World Series. The AL West is so weak it can only manage four teams, one of which is in the Central time zone.

And the Midwest? The Midwest is the proud home to the 2006 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, the 2005 World Series champion Chicago White Sox, the 2006 American League Cy Young award winner (Johan Santana) and now the 2006 American League Most Valuable Player (Justin Morneau). The best player in baseball (Albert Pujols) and the best pitcher in baseball (Santana) both reside on the Mississippi.

How do the Midwest teams do it while operating with payrolls so limited they include paying their players with postdated checks? It's no secret, and folks on the coasts can see the answer for themselves if they ever bother to look out the window while jetting over what they derisively call "flyover land." Central division teams succeed the same way everyone does it in the Midwest: by getting up earlier and working harder in worse weather than everyone else in the country.

East Coast and West Coast teams simply buy their rosters, but Midwest clubs raise theirs like the region's farmers who grow the crops that feed the nation. While Derek Jeter is still at a nightclub slurping Grey Goose off the chest of the latest Maxim cover girl, Pujols is building up his powerful wrists by waking up early and milking the cows on the dairy farm he bought with his first contract bonus. While Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi shoot every possible chemical into their body, Justin Morneau is bulking up by eating so much hearty sweet corn on the cob that he could test positive for ethanol. And after a long summer of striking out batters with his 90-plus smoke, Santana ices his arm during the winter by holding it out the rolled-down window as he drives to Lake Minnetonka for a little ice fishing.

The Midwest's supremacy goes beyond the players and the standings, though. You may root for a team on one of the coasts, but when you go to a game, the beer you drink and the hot dogs you eat likely come from the Midwest. Heck, even the stadiums themselves are rooted in the Midwest. The East Coast is the home of the House That Ruth Built, but the Midwest is the home of HOK, the stadium firm that builds most of the game's other houses, including Yankee Stadium 2.

About the only thing the Midwest is lacking compared to the coasts is scandal. The West Coast is the home of the Cream. The Midwest is the birthplace of cream of wheat. The West Coast has the Clear. The Midwest's got milk. The West Coast has Barry's head. The Midwest has the Metrodome.

Face it. In every way, the Midwest is superior to the coasts right now. Although, admittedly, there is no defense for the Kansas City Royals.

Random thought: How was the Nanny such a successful show? And why is it still in syndication? And why do I find myself watching it, on occasion?

Also, I wish I was asexual.

    Have a good night, folks.

    Memery!
Stolen from Mr. Kevin and Ms. Nicolle... sorry, I don't know how to make the pretty links.

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?
    REMEMBER DON'T CHEAT!
    So, here's how it works:
    1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
    2. Put it on shuffle
    3. Press play
    4. For every question, type the song that's playing
    5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
    6. Don't lie and try to pretend your cool...

OPENING CREDITS: "December" by Collective Soul. Apparently this is some sort of introspective movie. Perhaps it starts in a car. Yeah. New stage of life kind of thing.

WAKING UP: "Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd. Uhmm... apparently I don't want to go to school in the morning. Or am broadly bitter.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: "Roxie" from Chicago. Goddamnit, I do not look that much like Renee Zellweger. Gah. Other than that, it does suit my attention-loving drama queen self... and a little bit of wickedness.

FALLING IN LOVE: "Someday Never Comes" by CCR. Jesus. That's depressing.

FIGHT SONG: "I Could Not Ask for More" by Sara Evans. Hahahaha, oh the pacifism even comes out in memes! Hmm... or maybe I'll fall in love with who I'm fighting with. Yes, yes that's the plan.

BREAKING UP: "I'll Be There For You" by the Rembrandts. Hmm. Seems appropriate in some ways, given how much I love being friends with the exes. Also a little bittersweet. Also amusing since it's the theme song from Friends. A little too uptempo, perhaps.

PROM: "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" by Mary J. Blige and Gwen Stefani. I'm assuming this goes with the booty dancing. This may have actually been played at my Prom. It wasn't as slutty as the song implies, though.

LIFE: "At My Most Beautiful" by R.E.M. Aw. Such a good song. I can only hope.

MENTAL BREAKDOWN: "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" by Elton John. Haha, that is probably the kind of mental breakdown I'd have. To Elton John. About a boy.

DRIVING: "Build Me Up Buttercup" by the Foundations. Oh man. I better be on a roadtrip in this scene. Probably with the Chicago kids.

FLASHBACK: "Twitch" by Bif Naked. Apparently I used to be an adulterous homewrecker that loved to drive boys crazy. Hm. Well. I'll take it, I guess, though I feel bad about his girlfriend.

WEDDING: "Steal My Sunshine" by Len. Wow. I do not even know what I would say if this was my wedding song... unless I was marrying Nick Kaiser, who this song will always remind me of, in sophomore honors chem in HS.

BIRTH OF CHILD: "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen. Apparently I am very thrilled about this experience. Or I'm going to have like 900 times. I think it works with the barrage of hormones and the manic-depressiveness that ensues, though...

FINAL BATTLE: "There Is" by Boxcar Racer. Hmm. If by Final Battle, they mean, dramatic breakup montage, then perhaps.

DEATH SCENE: "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind. Uhmmm... do I die from a meth overdose? Bc that would be unfortunate.

FUNERAL SONG: "Sing Sing Sing" by some generic big band. Uhm. I have a really hip funeral, I guess. Where there is swing dancing. Oh freshman year marching show...

END CREDITS: "Such Great Heights" by Postal Service. I approve.

    Classes!
So I stalked my way through Add/Drop to get the classes I wanted...

I'm in Con Law with a fabulous fabulous guy, Property with a fabulous fabulous lady, LRW, which is, you know, LRW, Evidence, and International Law, the latter two with profs who are very funny.

Only one class on Monday, but it is at 9AM, bleh. And no class on Wednesday or Friday until 12!

Also, if people want to see me during winter break/January, now is your chance, since I'm making my last arrangements... though I will be writing my moot court brief for a substantial amount of that time. Alas... But yeah, I like friends.

    Songs of the moment/week
A few recommendations (not that these are new to most people, but whatev):

    1. Youngbloodz -- Im'ma Shine
    2. Ok Go -- You're So Damn Hot
    3. The Flaming Lips -- Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part I
    4. Sufjan Stevens -- Casimir Pulaski Day
    5. The Pink Spiders -- Modern Swingers
    6. Petey Pabloe -- Show Me the Money
    7. The New Pornographers -- Electric Version
    8. Spoon -- The Way We Get By
    9. Built to Spill -- Big Dipper

This is probably the hippest collection of songs I've ever put down ever, so don't expect anything resembling it again any time soon.

Also: no me gusta memos! rar!

    I'm so sporty!
We played law school softball on Monday, went to the driving range today, playing tennis tomorrow morning, and regularly play bocce and croquet on the lawn during lunch hour.

Such pleibian sports too, I know.

    Yay UVA.

I heart law school. Not ironically. Yet.
I loooooooooooooooooooove law school and I loooooooooooooooove my section, and I know that finals will suck and that I'll regret it and that memo writing sucks and that civ pro is boring, but whatever, I love it.

    So much better than working.

Arguably better than undergrad. Actually, way better than most of undergrad. Def. way more costume/theme parties/dressing up events. God bless the south.

I know that UVA is not for everyone, theoretically, but I honestly think we have the best time ever. At least from what I've heard of other people's law school experiences...

Here's to three years of ridiculousness and functional alcoholism.

(Though I still plan on getting good grades, and I do study quite a bit. But I like the reading so...)

    (Yes.)

(Until 1st semester grades come out.)

(But then I'd have all the more time to have fun, wouldn't I?)

    Much love,

    K

Hey all my mock babies (and others, if you so desire),

I've decided to try out for the mock trial team at UVA. I know. It's a little ridiculous.

(There's a question on the sheet that's like, do you have mock experience? and I'm like, well, no, technically... but that's a little sad, bc I do know a creepy amount about it and clearly have way too many personal relationships with people that did it undergrad... plus the whole Des Moines thing... but yeah, anyway)

But I have to make an opening/closing argument of 3-5 minutes defending or prosecuting a fictional character. They gave examples of like the Grinch stealing Christmas, or Stewie Griffin and matricide, George Constanza and inhumane dating, generally random things. But I am lacking the ideas, so much. So if you have any...

Also, if anyone wants to tell me how the hell you construct an opening/closing in general, it'd be very helpful. If you have past examples, all the better.

Also, which would be a better choice, strategically?

Yeah... good times. Aaron and Lauren can help me, but I need my Chicago peeps, since y'all clearly rock so much.

    With love,

    K
    1:55 pm
So I am in Legal Writing. I am unbelievably bored. Seriously, it's ridiculous. Then I have CivPro, which is also horribly dull. So basically Thursday afternoons are a waste of time, as far as I'm concerned. I can cuddle up with a supplement if I want to learn CivPro, Glannon makes a helluva lot more sense than the lady. Though she's nice. Oh well.

I finished my first memo... which was a horrible, horrible time. Seriously, so short, but so painful.

Alas, now I have to pay attention.

    Most boring entry ever.

But Dandelion (a strange sort of hazing ritual/parade) is going to rock. Oh yeah.

Dancing and softball later this afternoon though... I'm dressed ghetto fab with my ChiSox apparel. It's kind of amazing.

    Much love,

    K
